Despite Intel shifting focus to its Core Ultra 200S Series processors, its older 14th Gen Core stock remains defiantly popular and it’s not difficult to see why. Models like Core i9-14900K still hold their own against more-modern competitors, and are now far more affordable than they were at launch. In fact, you can now grab Intel’s former flagship at a surprisingly competitive price.

Intel Core i9-14900K
“Fully unrestricted for performance with up to 330W for the chip alone, Core i9-14900K remains a formidable competitor.” Read our review.
Amazon US is offering Core i9-14900K for just $388, down 10% ($45) from its typical price in the modern day but a far cry from its launch MSRP of $589. Better still, in the wake of this discount, the processor is now available at its lowest ever price.
Core i9-14900K still has plenty of kick to offer in 2025 if you can handle its appetite for power. Packing eight Performance-cores, 16 Efficient-cores, and 32 threads, it’s nothing short of a multi-core monster. It’s a marvel in terms of clock speeds too, capable of boosting up to 6.0GHz, a feat only Core i9-14900KS can better but good luck finding that chip let alone at a similar price to this one.
There are plenty of Socket LGA1700 motherboards out there that are compatible with Core i9-14900K. It’ll slot into a 700 Series chipset without fuss, but 600 Series boards may require a BIOS update before they’ll play nice with the CPU. I strongly recommend picking up either a Z790 or Z690 model, as they’ll allow you to unlock the full potential of the processor through overclocking.

Pitting Core i9-14900K versus Core Ultra 9 285K, the older Intel part is surprisingly close to its successor across all benchmark battlefields. Once you factor in price, though, value clearly leans towards the older CPU and LGA1700 platform for both gaming and production performance. This is, of course, providing you can stomach its high power draw of 330W.
Building a system around Core i9-14900K comes with two important bits of housekeeping. First, high-end cooling is a must for this processor as it proves testing even for 360mm AIO water coolers. Finally, you should immediately apply microcode patches upon installation to avoid damaging your CPU. Doing so is thankfully simple, as these fixes arrive part and parcel of the latest Windows updates.
