Dell’s 4K UltraSharp IPS Black monitors marry USB-C smarts with enhanced contrast

VA went faster. IPS is getting darker.

Hot on the heels of its latest gaming displays, Dell has introduced new 4K IPS monitors boasting IPS Black technology, unlocking next-level contrast ratios for this panel type.

IPS started as the go-to for high colour fidelity/viewing angles, then turned its attention to high speed/low input lag with 360Hz monitors, a territory previously dominated by TN panels. Today IPS is tickling VA by hitting 2,000:1 contrast ratios, courtesy of LG Display ‘IPS Black’ panels promising 35 per cent deeper black levels than current IPS solutions.

Two Dell monitors come accompanied with this technology, the U2723QE and U3223QE. Both have similar specs, only differing in their size, 27in vs. 31.5in, while being filled to the brim with ports and productivity features.

These 60Hz 3840×2160 monitors possess a wide colour gamut reaching 100 per cent sRGB, 100 per cent Rec. 709 and 98 per cent DCI-P3, alongside VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification thanks to a 400cd/m2 luminosity. Dell’s 2,000:1 contrast is double that of most normal IPS screens, making it a attractive choice for those craving inky blacks.

I/O is impressive, too, with Dell including HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, DisplayPort out, USB-C with DSC plus power delivery up to 90W, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 upstream, four USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 downstream with 15W charging, as well as 3.5mm audio and an Ethernet port.

As these are primarily office monitors, Dell also includes its suite of productivity features, like ComfortView Plus which reduces blue light emissions, Auto KVM to seamlessly switch between PCs while using the same mouse/keyboard, together with Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture for displaying multiple sources at the same time.

Daisy-chaining two 4K monitors is possible via DisplayPort, and versatility is decent with the supplied stand offering adjustability in height (150mm), tilt (-5° to 21°), swivel (-30° to 30°), and pivot (-90° to 90°).

Both monitors are now available via Dell, with the U322QE retailing for £903, while the U2723QE fetches £685. Both are backed by a three-year warranty as standard.
