AMD’s new gaming CPU beast, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, breaks the 5GHz barrier through BCLK OC, thanks to MSI’s overclocking team.
It was a surprise, and not a good one, when AMD announced that overclocking wasn’t permitted on Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Even if memory and Infinity Fabric can run faster, officially, the chip itself is locked. So, as with every challenge, users found a workaround. In this case, the chip was overclocked by increasing the base clock.
Massman was first to publish results on HWBOT. Equipped with an EKWB custom liquid-cooling system plus an Asus Crosshair VIII Extreme motherboard, Massman achieved 4.74GHz, compared to the default maximum frequency of 4.5GHz. Not much, you may say, but it’s proof of execution nonetheless.
TSAIK pushed things further using a more extreme solution, managing 5.14GHz (113.01MHz BCLK at 45.5x clock multiplier) running at 1.2V on an MSI MEG X570 Godlike using 1.G5T2 BIOS/AGESA 1.2.0.6C. The machine was also equipped with 8GB DDR4-2400 memory at 16-15-15-35-50-1 (tCAS-tRCD-tRP-tRAS-tRC-tCR) timings.
Regarding stability, Wccftech has been told that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D was only booted up in CPU-Z and no benchmarks were run. Furthermore, TSAIK didn’t submit the entry to HWBOT for some reason.
Finally, rumours claim that an unreleased BIOS offering improved OC may be out later. However, the overclocking potential of this CPU remains low, and normal users shouldn’t bother with it anyway, as this processor is good enough the way it is, even beating a Core i9-12900KS in some games.
