Microsoft has recently announced a refresh to its entry-level laptop – introducing the Surface Laptop Go 2. It offers a modest upgrade in tech and features and comes preloaded with Windows 11.
The original Surface Laptop Go was released in 2020, featuring a 12.4-inch display, it was the smallest full-sized laptop Microsoft launched. Intended to undercut competitors, its entry level configuration came with then latest 10th Gen Intel i5 processor, and featured 64GB eMMC storage and 8GB of RAM. While its specs couldn’t directly compete with the likes of the MacBook Air, it cost nearly half the price, and was a worthy alternative with a relatively premium design.
Analysis
Microsoft’s approach to the Go 2 continues from the previous model, offering updated specs delivered in signature Surface premium build quality and design in a lightweight, portable format. The Go 2 now features an 11th Gen Intel Processor, Intel Iris Xe graphics and comes with Windows 11 right out the box.
Closing in on specs, you will find and updated 128GB SSD for the entry-level configuration, sadly RAM is still the same at 4GB upgradable to 8GB. The tech giant claims the display, SSD, keyboard, and trackpad are all customer replaceable units, though any damaged incurred during repair isn’t covered by its warranty. Best send it to a Microsoft Authorised Service Provider to avoid any headaches, still the option is a welcome gesture.
The 12.4in PixelSense touch display makes a return, and features a resolution of 1536 x 1024, 148 PPI and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Additionally, 330 nits of peak brightness are more than enough on a tiny display and the reduced resolution should barely be noticeable considering its size. The Go display had a 102.6 per cent sRGB coverage and featured rich vibrant colours, we assume you can expect the same quality in the Go 2.
In terms of features, Microsoft claims the 720P webcam and dual mics have been improved considerably, ensuring you’ll look and sound great on your next conference call. A fingerprint reader is integrated into the power button for seamless login with Windows Hello. Connectivity is limited, with a single USB-C, USB-A, a 3.5mm headphone jack and Surface Connect Port. Wireless connectivity is covered by Wi-Fi 6.
The Go 2 features a new Sage colourway that joins Platinum, Ice Blue, and Sandstone, available for pre-order today. Starting from £529, it’s a good-quality affordable alternative, and an entry-level option for those who want a premium Windows Laptop without the hefty price-tag.
