CDPR’s upcoming The Witcher 4 gets lead director credentials

Certainly has big shoes to fill.

While there remains a possibility that our favourite Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, might not return as main protagonist in the upcoming The Witcher 4 title, the next main entry will feature former head of animation and animation director, Sebastian Kalemba, as the project’s new lead director.

The CDPR veteran announced via Twitter his new role that encompasses a saga of three upcoming Witcher games recently announced by the studio. Kalemba originally served as lead animator for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, before being promoted to head of animation for the studio. Suffice to say, he certainly has the credentials to back up the new role.

With regards to the new Witcher saga, Kalemba says, “I believe nothing is impossible and raising the bar, telling emotional stories & creating worlds is what we’re here for.”

The studio recently outlined its effort to introduce three new Witcher games (and a Cyberpunk sequel), starting with the release of project Polaris, that expands the story and lore from 2015’s critically acclaimed, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. The games will be delivered over a six year period.

The Witcher Remake Title

The studio also announced a “fully-fledged remake” of its original Witcher title released in 2007 and has already entered production using Unreal Engine 5.

An accompanying blogpost further detailed, “The Witcher Remake is what you might know by the codename ‘Canis Majoris’. It’s still early and we want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail, therefore, while we’re excited to share the news with you, we want to ask you for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail.”

In the interim, players can expect to see a Xbox Series X|S and PS5 upgrade for The Witcher 3, which is still slated for release in 2022, hopefully before the beginning of the holiday season. We await with bated breath.
