AOC seems to be working on a new successor to the three-year-old CU34G2X. Dubbed CU34G2XP, it features higher brightness and contrast alongside a faster refresh rate. Nice.
The CU34G2XP is equipped with a 1500R curved 34in (WQHD) ultrawide VA panel running at a lovely 3440×1440 resolution and refreshingly fast 165Hz. While clearly not the fastest gun in the west, the specs, coupled with a 1ms (GtG) response time, make it a versatile mid-pack display that should retail for reasonable prices. For instance, popular predecessor, CU34G2X, is selling for £350 – not bad for a large ultrawide.
The panel supposedly supports HDR10, but at the announced 350nits of brightness and without any known dimming zones, this aspect of the display can basically be forgotten. It’s not lowering the value of the monitor by any means, just don’t expect to buy one looking for breath-taking HDR quality.
Talking of quality, the panel excels in contrast ratio, which reaches 4000:1. Generally speaking, IPS displays offer around the 1000:1 mark, while VA are found at the much higher 3000:1 region. In other words, this panel is on the high side for its type. If you consume a lot of dark content, especially in a dim environment, this one’s for you.
Regarding colour support, CU34G2XP covers 99 per cent of sRGB and 91 per cent of DCI-P3 colour gamut, all while coming pre-calibrated out of the factory to a Delta-E below 2 for sRGB.
CU34G2XP also supports FreeSync Premium alongside technologies such as Blur Reduction, Black Stabiliser, Low Bluelight, Flicker-Free, PiP, PbP, and many overlay functions. The latter allows you to place a crosshair in the centre of your screen or add an FPS counter.
Finally, on the rear we find two DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0, a 3.5mm audio jack and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Hub. The stand allows the monitor to move 130mm in height, -5° to +23° tilt, and -32° to +32° swivel, with a 100×100 VESA support available if needed.
Pricing and availability are still unknown, but looking at the CU34G2X cost, we assume this newcomer will retail at the £400 mark.
