MSI’s upcoming MAG X670E Tomahawk motherboard is the cheapest yet

Entry-level X670E incoming!

MSI’s upcoming MAG X670E Tomahawk motherboard has been pictured showing a robust power delivery system and enough expansions and USBs for most users.

The X670E Tomahawk is an ATX motherboard boasting a 14+2+1 power design, of which 14 80A Smart Power Stages are dedicated to the CPU, fed via two 8-pin EPS cables. The board supports four DDR5-6600 memory modules, probably ‘limited’ to 128GB total memory, instead of 192GB on MSI’s 700 and 600 Series Intel boards.

Note that the maximum speed when four DIMMs are populated is unknown and could be as low as 4,000MT/s when using dual-rank modules, if we refer to the MPG X670E Carbon WiFi. Additionally, for the time being, beyond DDR5-6000 RAM brings more issues than performance on Ryzen 7000 Series CPUs.

As required by its X670E naming, the motherboard features a single PCIe 5.0 x16 for graphics cards, with the remaining space filled by two PCIe 4.0 x16 (x4 electrically) plus one PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. For storage, Tomahawk supports up to four M.2 SSDs (one Gen 5 plus three Gen 4), three of which are cooled by MSI’s M.2 Shield Frozr heatsinks. In case more storage is needed, four SATA III ports are available on the side.

Rear I/O comprises one USB-C 20Gbps, one USB-C 10Gbps, two USB-A 10Gbps, four USB-A 5Gbps, one HDMI 2.1, one DisplayPort 1.4, an eight-channel audio with optical out, 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Not to forget the handy BIOS Flash Back button.

Finally, there seems to be six 4-pin PWM fan headers, plus one for CPU fan and another for a pump, alongside a couple of RGB and chassis USB headers. We can also see some basic debugging LEDs, probably split into the usual CPU, DRAM, VGA, and BOOT sections.

@g01d3nm4ng0 indicates the suggested MSRP is around $339, which puts it right against Asus TUF Gaming X670E at $326. With pricing being reasonable instead of crazy, perhaps more users will flock to AMD’s AM5 platform.
