It’s astonishing how much value is available in the DIY PC scene right now. After years of inflated prices, there are bargains galore, particularly in CPU and SSD departments.

Today’s top pick is the Ryzen 7 5700X, an excellent processor whose price has tumbled once again to £149.99 in the UK and $191.54 US. That’s an all-time-low, and represents a better than 50 per cent saving over the original RRP.

A bargain in our book, and whether you’re building afresh or looking to give an existing AM4 platform a new lease of the life, the eight-core, 16-thread configuration and 4.6GHz top speed will tick the right boxes for both productivity and gaming. It’s a shame the chip isn’t part of AMD’s Starfield bundle promotion, but that really would have been too good to be true.

This also happens to be a frugal 65W solution, making it well suited to smaller form factors, or simply those who understandably have one eye on the ‘leccy bill.

While 5700X has been superseded by a Ryzen 7 7700X, the older chip still holds plenty of merit, and now costs practically half as much as the latest-generation equivalent. Factor in affordable motherboards plus cheap-and-cheerful DDR4, and it’s clear to see why AM4 remains such a popular choice among new builds in 2023.
