AMD delays Ryzen AI 300 series launch but not for long

13 extra days to polish.

AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processor resting on top of a pile of calendar dates

Ryzen AI 300 series processors will arrive on the scene later this month, inside new Copilot+ PCs. However, it appears AMD has made a last-minute adjustment to the exact release date. As a consequence, laptops equipped with these chips are now delayed, including those from Asus and other manufacturers.

AMD revealed its Ryzen AI 300 series processors during Computex 2024. The company shared plans to ship devices with its soon-to-be best CPUs sometime in July, remaining coy on a narrowed date even now. Product pages had previously given the game away but it seems Team Red believes its chips need a little longer in the oven.

Best Buy listings for Ryzen AI 300 series laptops (as spotted by hms1193), carry a later launch date than expected. While AMD seemed set to release its processors into the wild July 15, Team Red has seemingly shifted things along to July 28. This new date appears across several laptops, including Asus’ Zenbook S 16.

Providing this isn’t a placeholder date, which seems unlikely, this would place the Ryzen AI 300 series launch within days of AMD’s desktop Ryzen 9000 series. It’s unclear what’s prompted AMD to change course, but our money’s on some last-minute firmware optimisations from Team Red itself or manufacturing partners. After all, Ryzen 7 9700X might be getting a last-minute change too.

Arriving 13 days later than expected isn’t ideal but won’t jeopardise AMD’s plans to hit the market before Intel. Although, when Team Blue does arrive on the scene, early Lunar Lake benchmarks suggest it could be a worthy competitor. Perhaps MSI Claw 8 AI Plus won’t be the only blue blooded handheld of the future after all. Still, we’ll know for certain once we’ve had chance to test both chip families, so stay tuned for our reviews.

Until then, though, take a look at some Ryzen AI 300 series performance comparisons which show great promise based on AMD’s claims.
