Sony’s PS5 Pro has 2GB DDR5 RAM more than PlayStation 5

An unusual combo.

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro was spotted with an additional 2GB of DDR5 RAM. The console refresh is expected to deliver much higher performance without requiring deep game modification.

According to the paperwork found inside PlayStation 5 Pro boxes, Sony’s new console will pack 2GB of DDR5 RAM in addition to the larger SSD and faster GPU. In total, the console should pack 16GB of GDDR6 memory plus the aforementioned 2GB of DDR5. Note that this extra RAM isn’t the same. Since DDR5 isn’t the best for GPUs due to its lower bandwidth compared to GDDR6, we believe it’s destined to aid the console’s operating system specifically.

Unlike the CPU, which hasn’t changed from its eight-core Zen 2 design, the GPU has undergone a substantial overhaul. According to Sony, the graphics chip has 67% more compute units based on AMD’s RDNA architecture, linked to 28% faster RAM. This combo supposedly offers up to 45% faster rendering, i.e. performance. It also doubles ray tracing performance if we believe Sony’s claims. All inside a slightly smaller and lighter chassis, fitting right between the original and the slim models.

Add to that the brand’s in-house PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, and you should get a great boost in performance. You can leverage this extra horsepower to deliver higher-quality rendering or more frames per second, much like PC settings. I bet the former is the one most players will go for, especially for the initial 50 enhanced titles, which include:

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Albatroz
  • Apex Legends
  • Assassin’s Creed Mirage
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • EA Sports College Football 25
  • Dead Island 2
  • Demon’s Souls
  • Diablo IV
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Dying Light 2 Reloaded Edition

Other than that, you get the usual equipment you expect from a console, i.e. a controller and a USB cable to charge it, plus power and HDMI cables. However, note that the PS5 Pro is not bundled with a vertical stand. The latter is sold separately for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99. Not to mention the disc reader, which is another add-on that costs £99.99 / $79.99 / €119.99.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is scheduled to launch on November 7 at £699.99 / $699.99 / €799.99.
