Nvidia has announced that its GeForce Now game streaming service will not bill users for the next five weeks. Members who are currently subscribed will be able to play for free for the entire month of February and then some.
Starting January 31, its GeForce Now streaming platform won’t cost a penny as the brand transitions to a new payment provider. Though all recurring billings for active members will be temporarily frozen, accounts will remain in good standing during this transition.
Before prospective users get their hopes up thinking they might be able to game the system, there are some caveats. Firstly, the freebie is only available to existing subscribers. In fact, there’s no way to open an account in the meantime as Nvidia will pause the ability sign up. Instead, you can only chuck your hat in the ring to be notified when memberships open once again, which will then be billed at full price.
There’s also no way for existing members to upgrade or downgrade their plan during this period. Gift cards and promotional codes also won’t work until everything’s back running as normal.
Lastly, since heavy users won’t have the option to buy additional hours, affected accounts will be migrated to unlimited playtime. For those wondering, a recent change limits GeForce Now users to a 100-hour play time per month that can be extended by paying for extra time. We are talking between $2.99 and $5.99 per 15 extra hours, depending on the membership tier.
Interestingly, Nvidia has indicated that members who got the unlimited playtime upgrade can keep it until the end of 2025, as long as their premium membership remains uninterrupted. The adequate price will start billing following this grace period. You can learn more here.
While we don’t know if this situation is related to the recent halt of new memberships, it’s surely well-timed. As a reminder, last week Nvidia blamed the high demand for its platform as the cause for refusing new members. In any case, Team Green has the wind at its back, so better leverage it.
