AMD Radeon RX 9070 is a smidge slower than RX 7900 XTX in FurMark 2

Lest-gen performance, but cheaper, more efficient, and with AI upscaling?

New AMD Radeon RX 9070 benchmarks have leaked, showing performance near RX 7900 XT and XTX. Unsurprisingly, next-gen Radeon chips will be more of an efficiency and features upgrade and less of a horsepower boost.

According to a FurMark 2 test result shared by @GawroskiT on X, believed to be an RX 9070 due the identical 1002-7550 device ID spotted on previous leaks, the GPU delivered 7,931 points and 132fps on a system powered by the upcoming Ryzen 9 9950X3D. This puts it about 1% behind RX 7900 XTX which scores 8,030 points / 133fps, and nearly 10% faster than RX 7900 XT.

To be clear, these can’t be RX 7800 XT results like what the benchmark indicates because the latter only scores around 5,656 points in this test, i.e. 29% slower than this supposed RX 9070.

The detailed results also showed that the GPU frequency maxed out at 2,114MHz while consuming 348W and remaining under 76°C. These are interesting figures since another rumour claimed that RX 9070 will target a 220W TBP (total board power). Heck, even RX 9070 XT is said to aim for 304W. That’s said, these could be wrong, from an overclocked card, or showcasing another GPU altogether.

Elsewhere, folks at VideoCardz managed to obtain some gaming results for both RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. In these, we can see that RX 9070 is 20% faster than RX 7900 GRE at 1440p, 21% faster than RX 7900 GRE at 4K, and 38% faster than RX 6800 XT at 4K. RX 9070 XT on the other hand was 38% faster than RX 7900 GRE at 1440p, 42% faster than RX 7900 GRE at 4K, and 51% faster than RX 6900 XT at 4K. These are seemingly official AMD tests averaged using 30+ games. You can see more details in the table below.

AMD expects RX 9070 series to compete against Nvidia’s RTX 4070 and 4080 GPUs, claiming RX 9070 XT to be 42% faster than RX 7900 GRE. This performance comparison could hint at AMD’s price target which was announced to be lower than $800. Since RX 7900 GRE is set to $550 MSRP, we can hope to see RX 9070 series between $600 and $700. Wait and see.
