AMD took its sweet time to realise the potential of Radeon RX 7900 GRE outside of the China market, but the graphics card has since proven itself a welcome addition to the midrange market. Sadly, it seems that its time in the sun has come to an end with no official word as to the cause.
From my point of view, Radeon RX 7900 GRE remains one of the best graphics cards you can buy today. It’s far better value than GeForce RTX 4070 thanks to its 16GB VRAM and superior raster performance, even keeping pace with ray tracing enabled in some games. All of this only matters, of course, if you can find one on store shelves.
According to Tweakers.net, a board partner and several stores told the outlet that AMD now considers the status of Radeon RX 7900 GRE as ‘end-of-life’. In practical terms, this means that manufacturers will not supply retailers with new stock. At the time of writing, there’s no official word on its discontinuance.
Searching for Radeon RX 7900 GRE on several UK and US retailers does indicate the graphics card is in short supply. For example, on Newegg, there’s just one model in stock with all others either delisted or described as out of stock. Meanwhile, Overclockers UK has nothing available, and Scan UK has just one.
In all likelihood, the imminent arrival of Radeon RX 8800 and 8600 is spurring the sunsetting of Radeon RX 7900 GRE. I can only presume that other current generation offerings from AMD like Radeon RX 7800 XT aren’t long for this world either but stock remains relatively strong for now.
I hope AMD has learned valuable lessons from the reception of Radeon RX 7900 GRE that it applies to its RDNA 4 GPUs. It’s a terrible shame that the company’s most-attractive graphics card arrived at wider markets so late in its life and that of the Radeon RX 7000 Series. If the company hopes to claw market share away from Nvidia, Radeon cannot afford to be as unpopular next-go-around as it is currently.
CES 2025 should reveal all AMD has planned for Radeon, and Club386 will be there reporting on any announcements right from the show floor. So, be sure to tune into the company’s press conference on Monday, January 6 at 11am (PST).
