AMD claims it plans to launch Radeon RX 9000 Series in March so that it can enable FSR 4 in more games. It’s easy to interpret this as simply boosting the install base for the software suite with more recent releases, but the technology’s reach could be far wider if rumours hold true. In fact, it seems like Team Red is taking a leaf out of Nvidia’s book once again.
According to leaker Kepler_L2 on X, upcoming drivers will replace games’ existing FSR 3.1 DLL files with newer versions containing support for FSR 4. In other words, the number of titles that theoretically support the latest version of FidelityFX Super Resolution could give DLSS 4 a run for its money. Of course, you’ll need a Radeon RX 9000 Series card to use it. At the time of writing, there are 76 games that support FSR by AMD’s count.
This approach mirrors that of Nvidia, wherein users can replace DLSS 3 with DLSS 4 via the brand’s app to enable Multi Frame Generation and more in games that would otherwise miss out on the tech. GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 will be the first graphics cards to show off this benefit in its full glory come January 30, well ahead of AMD hitting the scene with its new graphics cards.
However you cut it, though, this is great news for anyone thinking of picking up Radeon RX 9070 or 9060 Series cards in the future. Having to wait months for hardware features to become useful is a pain at the best of times, speaking as someone that waited for FSR 3 to arrive. I’m still rocking my RX 7900 XT and I’m hopeful that FSR 4 can make its way to my RDNA 3 GPU and others, even if takes a while.
I am curious as to how well these driver injections will fare compared to native support for FSR 4. If all’s well, there shouldn’t be much perceivable difference if any. Here’s hoping AMD’s AI upscaler is worth the wait and that its Radeon RX 9000 Series pricing doesn’t sour proceedings.
