Following a strange last-minute omission during the company’s CES 2025 keynote, there’s been followup from AMD as to exactly when in Q1 its RDNA 4 GPUs will arrive nor how much they will cost. Nvidia may be the reason behind the radio silence as Radeon RX 9000 Series pricing was apparently too high relative to GeForce RTX 50 Series, prompting an unexpected and urgent delay.
According to PCGamesHardware forum user and leaker Pokerclock, AMD is reducing Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT prices in response Nvidia’s $549 price point for GeForce RTX 5070. However, plenty of retailers have already paid and received stock as has become clear from numerous leaks. This situation likely requires AMD to reimburse board partners and stores before sales can proceed, possibly through rebates or discounts on further shipments.
Despite this, one Greek retailer claims that Radeon RX 9070 Series graphics cards will be available from January 23. Given that a launch a few days from now seems very unlikely, this is either a placeholder date or perhaps the original launch day for Radeon RX 9000 before this apparent delay.
Given how expensive GeForce RTX 5090 is relative to the already-expensive GeForce RTX 4090, the price of GeForce RTX 5070 surprises me. If it similarly caught AMD off guard, then I completely understand the company’s decision to postpone the launch. After all, I’ve no doubt the company wants to avoid repeating the same mistake as with the Radeon RX 7000 Series which saw their price drop shortly after launch.
Hopefully rumours that AMD believes Radeon RX 9000 Series deserves its own event pan out, but there’s nothing concrete from the company yet. Keep those salt shakers handy as we march ever-closer to the dawn of a new generation of graphics cards and keep an eye out for Club386 reviews in due course.
