When AMD takes the stage at Computex 2025, it seems all but certain that the brand will spill the beans on its Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics cards. While rumours have consistently claimed that the pixel pusher will be available with 8GB or 16GB of VRAM, this may no longer be the case. Turns out, there could now only be one SKU on the horizon.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, an AMD representative told a board partner that there is a possibility that Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB will get the chop. This is despite the fact that production of the card is already underway, naturally in parallel with the 16GB model.
Given that there are Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB GPUs ready to go, this presents AMD with a few options. The easiest path would be to simply launch what stock it has only to quickly discontinue the variant and focus on the 16GB model completely. However, this would invite the same muddied reception that Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB has received thanks to its 8GB sibling.
Alternatively, AMD could make Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB a region-specific release for countries with weaker currencies that may not be able to afford the 16GB version. There’s always the option of repurposing some dies for a less-powerful Radeon RX 9050 XT of course. Personally, the last option seems the most sensible to me outside of an outright scrapping.
If it wasn’t already plain that 8GB GPUs belong in a museum, Hardware Unboxed explored the impact such a small buffer can have. The difference in performance and even game compatibility between GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and 8GB is plain to see. That extra memory capacity is quite literally game-changing.
If anything were to derail AMD’s momentum in the graphics card space, following the celebrated launch of Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070, it would be to mirror Nvidia’s RTX 5060 Ti product strategy. I hope the rumours described above prove true in at least some respect, but we should hopefully learn more come Computex 2025, if not beforehand.
If nothing else, I’m keen to see how Radeon RX 9060 XT stacks up against RTX 5060 Ti both in terms of price and performance. Expect a review on AMD’s card come launch, but in the meantime following Club386 on Google News will keep you up to date with any and all developments.
