AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE is on the way according to rumours

Another Great Radeon Edition graphics card could imminently emerge from AMD's labs as rumours swirl about Radeon RX 9070 GRE.

Both Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 have done wonders to improve the perception and position of AMD within the graphics card market. Upcoming RX 9060 Series cards could compound these gains but will be the final additions to the family for the foreseeable future. However, whispers tell of another pixel pusher on the way from Team Red, bearing a familiar moniker.

According to reports from ITHome and Benchlife, AMD is preparing to release Radeon RX 9070 GRE (Great Radeon Edition). The graphics card will soon enter mass production, meaning its launch shouldn’t be too far behind. It’s currently unknown whether this model will reach beyond the borders of China, like Radeon RX 7900 GRE before it, but there’s no reason to give up hope just yet.

In terms of specifications, current leaks describe Radeon RX 9070 GRE as boasting 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM and a 192-bit memory bus. For context, this is a stepdown from the 16GB and 256-bit configuration found on Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. This suggests AMD’s new addition to its roster would retail for less than the $549, possibly impinging on the $499 price point held by Radeon RX 7800 XT.

This buffer and bus width also mirror GeForce RTX 5070, potentially giving AMD an edge against Nvidia if it adopts pricing according to my guestimate above, albeit with slower GDDR6 modules. Of course, the real test of Radeon RX 9070 GRE’s value will be through its performance and there’s no word on what cutbacks its die could face past a trimmer memory configuration.

Until AMD confirms the existence of Radeon RX 9070 GRE take all the above with a grain of salt. Following that, its relevance to most would-be buyers will ultimately depend on worldwide availability. Until then, it’s likely that GeForce RTX 5060 Ti will occupy attentions as rumours claim it will launch later this month.

I’d certainly welcome more additions to the graphics card market, particularly in the wake of poor availability and frustratingly fluid pricing. It’s too early to tell whether Radeon RX 9070 GRE would be a worthwhile addition to the space, but I’ll be keeping a watchful eye on it.
