AMD has shed some light on its latest Radeon graphics launch, indicating that it was the best to date. According to the brand’s CEO, the flagship RX 9070 XT’s early sales left its predecessors in the dust.
During an interview with Asus China General Manager Tony Yu, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su answered some questions related to the brand’s GPU division. Among these, the CEO revealed that the Radeon RX 9070 XT’s first-week sales were ten times better than previous generations. A figure that doesn’t sound outlandish seeing the stocks some retailers had prior to launch. That said, AMD didn’t mention the RX 9070.
“Of course, everyone likes a very high-end GPU, but not so many people can access it,” Su said. “The 9070 XT has been a fantastic success. Actually, it’s the number one seller for all of the AMD Radeon generations for first-week sales by far, by 10x more than previous generations, and we like to see people happy. People are happy with the 9070 XT. […] We are very excited about it and are increasing manufacturing so that more gamers can access it.”
When asked about future availability, Su indicated that AMD is increasing its GPU manufacturing to meet demand. This would hopefully allow those who didn’t get their hands on these cards to grab one without paying higher prices. As noted by many, AMD is not immune to inflated prices when stocks are low, so more availability should keep things under control.
Even so, the Radeon 9000 stocks managed to grab a good chunk of market share in some regions. In Japan for example, AMD enjoys a 45% GPU market share already and shows no signs of slowing. The story may change if and when Nvidia sorts its supply lanes, but that’s how things are currently.
All in all, not a surprising result thanks to the combination of things AMD offered. Aside from the shortages its competition was facing, Radeon did offer new and compelling reasons to opt for it. The brand’s switch to AI-based upscaling with its latest FSR 4 technology brought it on par with Nvidia’s DLSS in many aspects, while the cards competitive pricing attracted more customers. Hopefully, the upcoming RX 9060 series will be as good, opening the way for low-budget gamers to also enjoy the latest graphic features.
