AMD RX 9070 XT trades blows with RTX 4080 Super in Black Myth

New drivers may push things even further.

AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 9000 Series has already fallen into public hands, which has led to some early benchmarks. The latest leaks show performance on par with Nvidia’s RTX 4080-class GPUs, but things may change against latest RTX 50 Series.

According to since-removed gaming performance results shared on the Chiphell forums, an AMD RX XXXX XT GPU was able to hold ground against an RTX 4080 Super. This unnamed card is likely an RX 9070 XT, based on its performance results.

In Cyberpunk 2077 using ray tracing, RX 9070 XT managed to deliver 85fps at 1080p resolution, 52fps at 1440p, and 26fps at 4k. In contrast, RTX 4070 Ti Super delivers 87/53/26fps at the respective resolution and RTX 4080 Super musters 101/65/32fps.

Things get even better with Black Myth: Wukong where the RX 9070 XT pushes 97fps at 1080p, 73fps at 2k, and 30fps at 4k. This puts it between RTX 4070 Ti Super’s 87/67/28fps and RTX 4080 Super’s 99/77/33fps.

Put simply, RX 9070 XT slots between an RTX 4070 Ti and an RTX 4080. But as usual, since we can’t verify these claims, they are as good as rumours. That said, they seem legit based on AMD’s targets. Even the brand’s new naming scheme suggested it would target Nvidia’s 70 class cards. Now, whether this performance will be enough to counter the RTX 5070 is still to be determined. At the very least, AMD’s optimised drivers should give Radeon another boost come release date, as these tests are performed without them.

If correct, this is a nice performance for a card expected to target $479. For reference, RTX 4070 Ti Super asks for at least $820, with RTX 4080 Super crossing the $1,000 mark.

Interestingly, both games noticeably favour Nvidia, likely owed to a direct partnership. Our GeForce RTX 4080 Super review shows AMD struggling to achieve a top ten spot in Cyberpunk 2077 at QHD resolution, so it’s refreshing to see Team Red improve its rendering technologies to put up more of a fight, especially with ray tracing on. So long as the price is right and drivers continue to bring joy, Radeon stands a good chance in the midrange.
