AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D outsells all other Ryzen 9000 Series CPUs combined

Retail sales figures for Ryzen 7 9800X3D are miles ahead of other Zen 5 CPUs and current generation competition.

It’s no secret that Ryzen 7 9800X3D has proven a critical and sales darling for AMD, with the processor still proving difficult to find at MSRP due to demand. This is in stark contrast to other chips in the company’s Ryzen 9000 Series, both in terms of reception and revenue. While the state of affairs are plain to see on the surface, diving into one retailer’s figures shows just how massive the gap is between the Zen 5 X3D CPU and its standard siblings.

German retailer Mindfactory publicly displays approximate sales figures for all the products it offers, and is now finally sharing the number of Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors it’s shifted since launch. It claims to have sold over 8,650 of the chips, not only making it the best-selling current-generation AMD CPU but placing it well ahead of all other Ryzen 9000 models combined.

CPUUnits soldRelative sales performance
Ryzen 7 9800X3D8,650+100.00%
Ryzen 7 9700X2,530+29.24%
Ryzen 5 9600X900+10.40%
Ryzen 9 9900X810+9.37%
Ryzen 9 9950X780+9.01%

None of the other Zen 5 processors even come close to matching Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with all but Ryzen 7 9700X falling short of four-figure sales. However, the latter’s reported units sold of 2,530~ is still well short by a factor of 3.4x relative to the former. While I don’t expect Ryzen 9 9000X3D models to trump Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X to the same extent, I’ve little doubt that they’ll fare better.

Turning attentions to the Ryzen 7000 Series, there’s still a ways to go before the current 3D V-Cache champion catches up to its predecessor. At the time of writing, Ryzen 7 7800X3D has sold a whopping 78,420 units since June 2023. With time, Ryzen 7 9800X3D should be able to close the gap if not exceed its forebear.

At the very least, both Ryzen 7 9800X3D and other Ryzen 9000 processors are selling markedly better than Core Ultra 200 Series. Intel’s flagship Core Ultra 9 285K boasts just 70~ units sold, with Core Ultra 7 265K leading the charge with a slightly better turnout of 100~ sales.

Excellent as Ryzen 7 9800X3D is on its own terms, it’s clear that it partly owes its success to the slate of middling processor releases on top of the fervent hunger from gamers eager to push frame rates ever-higher through 3D V-Cache. I’ve little doubt it’ll remain the darling choice for many for the foreseeable future, particularly given the rumoured extended wait time for Zen 6 successors.

All the same, I’m excited to see what AMD has its up its sleeves at CES 2025 on the Ryzen and Radeon fronts come January 6, 7PM (GMT). Club386 will be in attendance, so be sure to follow the site via Google News so you’ll be in the know as soon as any news drops.
