We’ve had one X3D CPU, yes. What about second (and third) X3D CPU? This is the question many enthusiasts have at the forefront of their minds. Since the launch of Ryzen 9 9900X & 9950X, many continue to patiently await the arrival of their X3D variants. The chips should arrive soon but leaks ahead of launch are promising good news for the potential kings of the processor hill.
Across several X posts, 9550Pro has shared alleged details concerning Ryzen 9 9900X3D & 9950X3D specifications, as well as performance estimations for both chips. According to the leaker, neither processor will feature markedly lower operating frequencies than their vanilla siblings. Ergo, we should expect out-of–the-box maximum boost clock speeds of up to 5.6GHz and 5.7GHz, respectively.
9550Pro claims that AMD will specialise each CCD, one for frequency and the other for cache, mirroring its prior Ryzen 9 7000X3D designs. However, these processors will undoubtedly follow in the footsteps of Ryzen 7 9800X3D, with support for overclocking and shifting their 3D V-Cache underneath the CPU cores for better performance.
However, the leaker states that Ryzen 9 9950X3D’s single-thread and multi-thread performance is broadly similar to the existing Ryzen 9 9950X. As previous X3D CPUs demonstrate, the degree to which additional cache benefits applications can vary wildly. That’s providing Windows sends workloads to the most beneficial core, of course, something I hope AMD can properly resolve come launch.
I’m still sad that it seems like Ryzen 9 900X3D won’t use 3D V-Cache on both CCDs, but I remain hopeful that AMD will deliver given time. In lieu of such a CPU, I’d settle for a successor to Ryzen 5 7600X3D providing it received a proper worldwide release. More X3D can only be a good thing is what I’m getting at here and I’m certainly not the only one who think so.
Expect to hear more on Ryzen 9 900X3D come CES 2025, where I expect AMD will unveil its Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card too. Club386 will be in Las Vegas for the show, so stay tuned for any and all announcements.
