Asus ROG Ally X gets a swanky handheld overhaul, but it’ll cost you

The Batman of handhelds.

Asus ROG Ally X.

Asus has released the full spec list and pricing of its ROG Ally X gaming handheld, confirming the upgraded RAM and battery capacity. The heart of the machine remains the same but now comes enveloped in a black chassis.

Following a competent yet rocky start for the original ROG Ally handheld, Asus decided to give its machine some love while fixing its weaknesses. The new ROG Ally X now ticks one of the most important boxes for gamers on the go: battery life. Thanks to its 80Wh battery, the Ally X should double the original’s playtime.

However, that doesn’t mean performance is left aside. Asus has also packed 50% more RAM, now totalling 24GB of LPDDR5 at 7,500MT/s. Unfortunately, the CPU and GPU didn’t see much change, still rocking 8 Zen 4 cores at 5.1GHz boost alongside 12 RDNA 3 CUs delivering 8.6 Teraflops of compute power. The screen is also identical to the original at 7in, 1080p as Asus sidesteps the OLED approach.

But that’s not all. Getting rid of the expensive XG Mobile interface that I’d bet very few people actually used, ROG Ally X now packs an extra Thunderbolt 4 port that supports video and power delivery. There’s even a rearranged SD card reader to avoid future issues. Ah, and you can now install more games as the Ally X boasts double the storage. This is good since this model ships with three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, so you can hit the ground running.

According to Asus’s website, the new Ally X will be available in UK stores for £799. For reference, the original Ally debuted at £699 for the performant version and £599 for the base model; the former is currently at £499. After a few woeful blunders in the community space, Asus has increased the warranty coverage to two years, giving your device a safety net that lasts a little longer. While £200 is far from pocket change, the extra battery life makes this hard to pass by.
