Bungie has recently announced a Nerf version of Gjallarhorn, an iconic launcher featured in Destiny, brought to life all thanks to Bungie’s consumer team. Nerf makes the popular foam-blasting weapons, and Bungie announced a collaboration with the toymaker last year.
As you may know, Destiny 2 is a first-person MMO set in a mythic science fiction world, complete with RPG elements and immersive storytelling. The main elements surrounding the game include a vast amount of loot to improve the killing abilities of the player-created Guardian; Gjallarhorn being one of most sought after and popular guns among them, and naturally the obvious choice for an iconic Nerf version.
Design
Saying the Gjallarhorn is massive is a severe understatement. It measures around four feet long, and Bungie x Nerf sought to create a surprisingly accurate version of the in-game counterpart. A lot of research and development went into making the weapon come to life, even recreating the cool reloading system, says Bungie.
“We wanted to integrate how it reloads in the game so the entire top housing of the Blaster itself shifts forward, it opens the loading bay just like it does in the game, you pop the shell in just like the animation, and then you pull it back and you’re ready to blast off a burst of three MEGA darts, which is super awesome,” said Justin Saccone, Senior Product Engineer at Nerf.
The design also features Nerf’s largest darts, specifically created for the weapon, with Saccone stating: “With that shell, we’re shooting three of those MEGA darts at once, which gives that visual sense of the Wolfpack Rounds swirling and flying through the air towards your target.”
BFG is puny
Gjallarhorn comes complete with a massive 40in box, featuring amazing attention to detail and artwork inspired by Destiny’s lore and visuals, which surely increases the value as a collector’s item.
Looking to get one for yourself? In classic Destiny fashion, you’ll have to jump through a few hoops to ensure you get your hands on the toy. Bungie requires completing a special quest in the Destiny 2: Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack before July 7, 2022. Eligible players must be signed up for Bungie Rewards and Bungie Store to purchase during the early-access window.
“You have to earn it in the game first and that’s just so cool,” says Allie Eibeler, Product Development Manager at Bungie further adding “it’s an awesome way to make sure the people who are most excited, who’ve been waiting for this for a year at this point, can get their hands on the NERF LMTD Destiny Gjallarhorn Blaster first.”
Priced at $185 buckaroos, the special early-access window runs between July 7 and July 21, ensuring only the most dedicated fans get first pickings of the collector’s item. Thereafter, it’s free for all. Mind you, it’s a limited run, and one caveat being that due to its size, shipping to areas outside of the USA may be restricted.
