Crime Boss: Rockay City is a weird mashup of ’90s action heroes and villains

"I'm gettin' too old for this..."

505 Games and InGame Studios latest title is a first person co-op inspired by ’90s crime and heist films and features both fictional and real life counterparts of action heroes, femme fatales, and villains of yesteryear. Colour me intrigued.

It’s arguably one of the biggest surprises revealed at The Game Awards ceremony last week, with a short trailer revealing the voice and video game likeness of everyone from Michael Madsen in the leading role as Travis Baker, as well as Michael Rooker, Danny Trejo, Kim Basinger, Danny Glover and Vanilla Ice to name but a few in various supporting roles.

The game is set in a fictional crime-ridden ’90s Miami Florida and an extended gameplay footage trailer reveals a crime shooter with elements eerily similar to 505 Game’s previous entries, Payday and Payday 2. For one, it’s a four-player co-op with various elements including first-person gunplay, stealth-based heist sequences, and gung-ho, “all hell breaks loose” action set pieces.

Graphics so far might not be the best we’ve seen but it is aesthetically pleasing and brings all the ’90s nostalgia with it, including mullets, questionable fashion choices, glowing neon signs and Chuck Norris who plays a Walker Texas Ranger caricature of himself. Cowboy hat, sheriff badge, round-house kick, and all.

Crime Boss: Rockay City arrives on PC this coming March 28, 2023, via the Epic Game Store, followed by a console release later in the year. It might not be a shoe-in for game of the year, but it looks to be a good, fun nostalgic trip down memory lane with friends.
