Update: AMD responds to dead Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPUs

Are we on the brink of another Ryzen burning saga?

Update 02/04/25: AMD has responded to claims of Ryzen CPUs not posting with advice on how to solve issues.

We are aware of a limited number of user reports involving ASRock AM5 motherboards failing to complete POST. Following a joint investigation, AMD and ASRock identified a memory compatibility issue present in earlier BIOS versions, which has been rectified in the latest BIOS. ASRock has already issued guidance on this behavior and addressed a singular report of a damaged CPU.

It’s worth noting that a failure to POST can be caused by a range of factors and does not necessarily indicate a non-functional CPU. We recommend users start by updating their BIOS to the latest version available for their specific motherboard model.

If the issue persists, we encourage users to contact our customer support team for further assistance and diagnostics.

Original article 01/04/25: AMD may be facing another instance of failing Ryzen processors as user reports begin to pile up on forums. Over 100 Ryzen 7 9800X3D owners have shared their stories of CPUs suddenly dying on Reddit. Could this be a repetition of the overzealous firmware code pushing voltages too far on these chips? Hopefully not.

Following growing reports of broken AMD Ryzen CPUs in 2025, Reddit user natty_overlord compiled all feedback in one place, showing a worrying picture. At the time of writing, some 120 cases of damaged Ryzen processors have been reported, 108 of which concern Ryzen 7 9800X3D models.

Now, while the motherboards linked to these failures are evenly distributed among X870, B850, X670, and B650 chipset-based models, 98 of the 108 cases happened on ASRock boards. Keep in mind however that correlation does not imply causation. When separated by chipset, 49 (45%) were installed on X870 boards, 36 (33%) on B850 boards, 16 (15%) on B650 boards, and seven (7%) on X670 boards. 82% of these were made by ASRock, 13% by Asus, 4% by MSI, and 1% by Gigabyte.

That said, while unfortunate for these unlucky users, especially if the cause isn’t user-induced, 108 dead CPUs is a drop in the bucket when it comes to overall sales figures. To get an idea, German retailer Mindfactory alone sold 21,120 units to this date. That doesn’t diminish the heartbreak of your fancy new processor biting the dust, particularly given X3D’s hardened reputation, but these reports are not yet cause for concern or panic.

If your machine has been running fine for months, you should be good, so no need to touch it. Maybe also avoid updating the BIOS for the time being until AMD or its partners issue an official statement. Only a deep investigation can discover the root cause of these issues to inevitably put owner fears to rest.
