Deal of the day: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X is tantalisingly low

Generations have past, but the value has only gotten better.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X CPU offers huge savings.

Now that we know Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X don’t quite live up to the hype, you can rest easy in the arms of a more familiar architecture, knowing it’s money well spent. For example, AMD’s venerable Ryzen 7 5800X holds up perfectly fine as one of the most stable CPUs around, and it’s currently hovering just above its lowest price ever.

Admittedly, it’s taken a little longer than anticipated to see it reach these lows, but a 61% discount off its launch price brings the processor down to $174 on Amazon US. It’s a similar deal in the UK, with a 62% reduction at £159. Both are just a few dollars or pounds over the cheapest we’ve seen.

Despite being two generations old at this point, the eight-core, 16-thread processor keeps the same count as the latest lot. Running at 105W with a 3.8GHz base and 4.7GHz boost clock, it’s hard to ignore just how much value it packs. By comparison, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D offers a 6-11% boost, but you’ll pay substantially more for the luxury.

The only thing to note is that Ryzen 7 5800X remains on AM4 restricted to 3,200MHz DDR4 RAM. These aren’t hard to come by, though, and make for a fantastically cheap build capable of gaming at 1080p. With the introduction of the bizarrely-priced Ryzen 7 5800XT in 2024, AMD still actively supports the older platform.

I recommend you try it out for yourself and just send the chip back if you’re not happy. Amazon offers a return window of up to 30 days, letting you get your money back, no questions asked. If you’re a Prime subscriber, you’ll even get your processor by tomorrow.
