SSD and CPU bargains aren’t quite as hot as they were a month or two ago, but fear not, if you need a reason to loosen the purse strings, a new monitor could be just what the doctor ordered.

Competition is fierce in this innovative space, and a prime pick right now has to be the Gigabyte M28U, whose price has dropped to an all-time-low of £449 in the UK. Pricing across the pond is competitive, too, with the display fetching $429 at Amazon US.

This 28in IPS panel boasts a 4K resolution (3840×2160) and speedy 144Hz refresh rate, making it an ideal choice for both gaming and productivity. It’s easy to see why the monitor is proving popular, as value-adds include a built-in KVM, 94% DCI-P3 colour coverage and support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro adaptive synchronisation.

Gigabyte’s panel isn’t the brightest at 300 nits, so HDR usage will be basic at best, yet there is a 120Hz console mode and HDMI 2.1 connectivity, so you’re all set to hook up a PS5 or Xbox Series X for eye-popping visuals.

If the budget doesn’t quite stretch so far, or like many you prefer to game at QHD, it’s also worth taking a look at the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD. Fractionally smaller at 27in, this QHD IPS panel hits 165Hz and is cheaper than ever before at £299 from Amazon UK.

We’ve often stated that a new monitor is the most impactful upgrade for many users, and as these prices, the time has come to migrate away from good ol’ 1080p FHD. What’s it to be, 1440p QHD or 2160p UHD? Decisions, decisions.
