Dragon Age: The Veilguard system requirements are kind to old PCs

Following swiftly after a release date reveal, BioWare has shared the official Dragon Age: The Veilguard system requirements. This RPG has been a long time coming, and its minimum and recommended specs are somewhat indicative of that fact. In fact, the game will run on hardware that’s practically medieval by today’s standards.

Without having tested the game, it’s difficult to say with certainty what the most cunning upgrade would be to get the most out of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Based on my experience with previous entries in the series and Frostbite titles, I’d suggest magicking up the best graphics card you can. Don’t worry if you can’t afford a modern pixel pusher, though, as BioWare’s latest will run on now decade-old models.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard minimum requirements are surprisingly low. GPUs with performance that at least matches Radeon R9 290X and GeForce GTX 970 will do just fine. For context, these are graphics cards that are a decade-old plus. While the developer hasn’t provided performance estimates, we presume specs of this calibre won’t paint Thedas in its prettiest light. Expect to turn down graphics settings and resolution alike, with acceptable performance levels.

The game is similarly encompassing of older processors, demanding CPUs akin to Ryzen 3 3300X and Core i5-8400. These are ageing quad-core chips, so any modern hexacore and above will do just fine. The developer notes, however, that AMD chips on Windows 11 will require AGESA V2 1.2.07. If you’re unsure how to perform a motherboard BIOS update, check out our guide.

Finally, BioWare asks you to prepare your PC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard with 16GB of RAM and clear 100GB of storage for installation. As you’d expect from a 2024 release, solid-state storage is ideal, so be sure to give our best SSD shortlist a glance if you’re yet to move on from a hard drive.

Moving up to the Dragon Age: The Veilguard recommended requirements doesn’t take a significantly higher level of constitution. Graphics cards from two generations ago, namely GeForce RTX 2070 and Radeon RX 5700 XT have the pixel pushing power to see you right. Meanwhile, the needle moves up to octa-core processors from several years back, Core i9-9900K and Ryzen 7 3700X.

All in all, preparing for the game’s October 31 release date should be a quest any aspiring hero can complete. Alternatively, you can play Dragon Age: The Veilguard on Steam Deck without issue as it boasts Valve’s coveted ‘Verified’ status.

There’s no word on whether the game will support upscalers including Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR. Nor is there any sign of ray tracing. With Gamescom around the corner, I’ll keep my fingers crossed BioWare is holding back some surprises for PC players.
