Intel Arc B770 graphics cards may be on the way after all

Intel is continuing to experiment with its BMG-G31 GPU behind closed doors, instilling hope for a future retail release via Arc B770.

Following the respective highs and lows of Arc B580 and B570, there’s been no word from Intel on its immediate plans for the dedicated graphics card market. Many presume the brand has moved on from its B-Series offerings, placing its focus on future C-Series (Celestial) SKUs. However, rumours of Battlemage’s demise may have been greatly exaggerated.

X user Haze2K1 spotted a reference to ‘BMG-G31’ in a recent shipping manifest. This undoubtedly describes a more-powerful GPU from Intel. As a reminder, Arc B580 and B570 sport a BMG-G21 die.

While this would normally undoubtedly indicate that a would-be Arc B770 is en route, this manifest comes with a disclaimer. Intel specifically describes this as being ‘for R&D purpose[s]’, meaning its appearance and use shouldn’t have any bearing on a potential retail release.

Combine this disclaimer with rumours from a few weeks back that Intel canned BMG-G31, all seems lost for Arc B770. However, a glimmer of hope remains for the would-be challenger to further budget offerings from AMD and Nvidia.

X post by OneRaichu, discussing Intel processes as well as Arc B770 GPU.

Soon after the appearance of the shipping manifest, leaker OneRaichu commented that they believe Arc B770 isn’t quite dead. Sadly, the user didn’t elaborate why they believe this to be the case or provide evidence, but they wouldn’t say so without cause.

This potential resurrection of BMG-G31 could stem from a change in Intel management. CEO Lip-Bu Tan assumed their position just over a month ago, taking over from interim staff following the exit of Pat Gelsinger, undoubtedly ushering in changes of direction.

While Arc B580 held its own against the likes of GeForce RTX 4060 and Radeon RX 7600, a potential Arc B770 would have altogether more-powerful foes to face. Intel’s flagship would need to contend with GeForce RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060, not forgetting Radeon RX 9060 Series cards.

It’s impossible to say whether more-powerful silicon from Intel would be up to the task, as there’s too many unknowns about all the GPUs involved. However, I’m hopeful that Intel can help make what’s arguably the most-important part of the graphics card market more competitive with further Arc products. Of course, that’s providing they can resolve problems with older CPUs.

If there’s any immediate news to share about Arc B770, then I expect Intel will talk about it at Computex. After all, AMD is allegedly unveiling its Radeon RX 9060 Series cards at the same event.

Either way, May will see GeForce RTX 5060 hit the market so stay tuned for our review on Nvidia’s budget pixel pusher. Give the site a follow on Google News so you’ll know as soon as it drops alongside any other developments in the graphics card space.
