The first batch of BIOS updates containing the long-awaited Intel microcode update for Socket LGA 1700 motherboards has arrived without warning. While we expect to see more manufacturers publish patches, MSI and Asus are leading the charge with their Z790 stock. We strongly advise suggest those with 13th & 14th Gen Core processors apply these new versions immediately, despite their beta state.
Intel is following through on its promise to publish its microcode fix in August. These BIOS updates should prevent instabilities that can damage 13th & 14th Gen processors caused by incorrect voltage requests. The list of affected models includes the company’s best CPUs with 125W TDPs, as well as 65W and potentially mobile SKUs too. This damage is irreparable once done, making its prevention a top priority for all companies and users involved.
Below, you’ll find a list of Asus and MSI motherboards with BIOS updates containing the Intel microcode fix. Note, Asus files are currently only available via Google Drive, courtesy of SoonHo Jeong (a.k.a. Safedisk) but should be available via official product pages imminently.
Safedisk also recommends not using old CMO files. These are backup files that contain BIOS settings such as OC and power options. This is understandable, since this update tries to fix the faulty power controls of the previous microcode. That said, normally the BIOS shouldn’t let you recover such settings anyway, as it would detect they are from an older version.
We can’t guarantee that this beta version will completely resolve the issue, but it’s worth applying all the same. It’s unclear if manufacturers will make any amends to the final versions of these BIOS, but that will be revealed in good time. Regardless, we’re glad to see Intel finally begin to address this longstanding issue.
