Intel reveals its Lunar Lake event to launch Core Ultra 200V CPUs

One for the calendar.

Intel has officially announced that we’ll see its next-generation Core Ultra CPUs early in September. Team Blue will hold an event to unveil its upcoming mobile components that will appear in laptops and, most likely, some handhelds.

Codenamed Lunar Lake, Intel teases “breakthrough x86 power efficiency, exceptional core performance,” and “massive leaps in graphics.” It also heralds the new chips as “unmatched” in the AI computing realm, destined to drive portable PCs further. It’ll be interesting to see if the company can back up such lofty claims.

The keynote takes place in Berlin, kicking off on September 3 at 9:00 PDT, 12:00 EDT, 17:00 BST, 18:00 CEST. You’ll be able to watch via livestream on the usual YouTube and Intel Newsroom channels, or play catch-up once it’s aired.

This lands just before IFA 2024, which takes place just a few days later from September 6-10. Intel will make an appearance at the event, likely to show off new Core Ultra 200V products in-person. It’s also oddly close to Intel Innovation on September 25, where Arrow Lake is rumoured to make an appearance.

Key people include Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group, Michelle Johnston Holthaus alongside senior vice president and general manager of the Client Business Group, Jim Johnson. Select partners will also be around, but the brand hasn’t hinted at who just yet.

So far, we’ve heard a lot about what’s in the pipeline. The first thing you need to know is that naming conventions aren’t the easiest to follow. While Intel will focus on Lunar Lake with this launch, the architecture shares the Core Ultra 200 moniker with Arrow Lake, which will also appear in laptops alongside desktops. Instead, you’ll need to keep an eye out for 200V specifically.

Most of the line-up will include four P-cores and four E-cores, which goes further than you’d think. Performance-wise, you can expect Core Ultra 200V to go head-to-head with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. Early benchmarks hint it’ll be supremely efficient, boasting high performance at lower power draws.

Of course, you’ll need to wait until September to see if all these whispers are true. It’s just around the corner, so pop a reminder in your calendar and check back for the full reveal.
