The monitor performance ceiling continues to rise, netting more screens with better brightness and less blur. This upward trajectory necessitates new means of quality assurance to accommodate the capabilities of high-performance panels. Now, DisplayHDR has published two additional categories for its DisplayHDR and ClearMR certification programmes that will help separate the wheat from the chaff.
DisplayHDR True Black 1,000 and ClearMR 21,000 are VESA’s new gold standards for self-emissive displays and motion clarity, respectively. Manufacturers including Gigabyte, LG, MSI, and Samsung have thrown support behind each.
So, what does each certification entail? As its name suggests, DisplayHDR True Black 1,000 applies to OLED and QD-OLED monitors that can output a brightness level of 1,000cd/m2 in an 8% window. However, the accolade also requires the panel produce 500cd/m2 on a full-screen patch of white. This is up from DisplayHDR True Black 600’s requirements of 600d/m2 and 350d/m2, respectively. You can find all the details on the new standard here.
Meanwhile, ClearMR 21,000 promises at least 1,950% more clear pixels than blurry. To put that into context, that’s just short of 100 clear pixels in motion for every 5 blurry ones. Expect to see this certification on the highest refresh rate displays aimed at esports enthusiasts, likely sporting TN panels. These new certifications should serve as helpful guiding stars for those on the hunt for the best gaming monitors, particularly as new contenders enter the space following CES 2025. While we’ll need to wait and see for each company to reveal their plans, particularly any boasting either of the new VESA standards. In the meantime, though, we have had sneak peeks at MSI’s curved dual-mode display and Asus’ lineup.
