Microsoft pushes Windows 11 24H2 to more PCs but you might want to avoid it

Windows 11 24H2 may bring in as many bugs as it does features.

Microsoft has announced plans to expand the rollout of Windows 11 24H2 starting this week, but many bugs are still present in this latest build. From small problems including colour issues to more serious instabilities, you may want to postpone any plans to update.

Windows 11 24H2 offers a swathe of changes and new features to the operating system, including several bug fixes (among the many others introduced or left unaddressed). Microsoft will also begin to recommend the update to those running Windows 10 22H2 as its EOL status draws ever closer. Consumer PCs will have little choice in the matter but the rollout will spare workplace devices managed by IT administrators.

While Club386 generally recommends keeping your OS up-to-date, this version of Windows might prove an exception. Here’s a taster of some of the known issues:

  • Easy Anti-Cheat conflicting with online gaming apps, causing BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) on machines powered by modern Intel CPUs. Same for some systems powered by Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST).
  • Some users may suffer from an amnesiac clipboard that forgets saved text.
  • Webcam usage may cause unresponsiveness on certain apps on machines featuring object recognition.
  • Shared PCs and printers may not show up on your network.

Now, if none of these bugs are problematic for your usage, Windows 11 24H2 does bring some nice changes:

  • You will have the option to resume your work on another machine if you switch within five minutes.
  • File Explorer now pins files shared by others to your quick-access menu.
  • You will have options to directly share a file with apps that support this feature.
  • The Mobile hotspot now supports 6GHz bands on compatible devices.

As for those rocking new Copilot machines with AI capabilities, you will find more camera effects such as blur, Cocreator (a tool to AI-generate images based on basic hand drawings), not forgetting live video captions and translation.

In terms of fixes, some of my personal highlights include:

  • The mouse cursor disappearing or stuttering.
  • The Snipping tool taking distorted images on multi-monitor setups that mix different aspect screens.
  • Over-saturated images using Auto-HDR.

Note that this is a non-exhaustive list of the bugs or changes coming with Windows 11 24H2. You can check out Microsoft’s support page for a full list of known issues.
