MSI QD-OLED monitor features full-speed DisplayPort 2.1a input

It's only missing a compatible GPU.

MSI is working on the ultimate gaming monitor for those who only accept the best. Powered by QD-OLED technology and a full-speed DisplayPort 2.1 connection, this bad boy is literally ahead of its time.

Featuring the latest DP 2.1 UHBR20 port, MSI MPG 322URX tackles a point that some enthusiasts were missing on existing displays. Thanks to the much higher 80Gbps bandwidth on offer, this gaming beast can deliver its full 4K resolution at 240Hz refresh rate without needing DSC (Display Stream Compression). For comparison, the widely available DP 1.4a ports can only provide 32.4Gbps, thus requiring DSC on such specs.

For those unfamiliar, DSC is a form of compression that encodes images – with fewer chroma samples – to lower the required bandwidth for a set resolution and refresh rate. It allows modern panels and PCs to present fast and more detailed images without needing fancier interfaces. While DSC is practically lossless to the human eye, some users still want the true experience without any compression. For that, the only way is through DP 2.1 UHBR20 links.

Note however that you will need a compatible GPU to benefit from the extra throughput. Currently, no consumer graphics card ships with DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 ports. The closest you can get is using a DP 2.1 UHBR13 on AMD’s Radeon 7000 Series, maxing at 52.22Gbps.

Regarding the remaining specs, MPG 322URX seems identical to MPG 321URX, offering a 31.5in 3840×2160 QD-OLED panel with 10-bit colour depth. This allows it to cover 138% sRGB, 99% DCI-P3, and 98% Adobe RGB colour gamuts, at a DeltaE below 2 out of the box, according to MSI.

Likewise, brightness is advertised as 250nits in SDR, with peaks up to 1,000nits in HDR. QD-OLED’s strengths are all present, offering 1,500,000:1 contrast, a super-fast 0.03ms GtG pixel response time, and DisplayHDR 400 TrueBlack for those High Dynamic Range movies and games. Talking of which, gamers get the mandatory variable refresh rate (VRR) support through AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro or Nvidia’s G-Sync, in addition to a ClearMR 13000 certification indicating a blur-free experience.

On the connectivity side, you get two HDMI 2.1, one USB Type-C with DP Alt Mode and 98W power delivery, a two-port USB hub, a headphone-out jack, and the star of the show: a single DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20. MSI even bundles a UHBR20 cable with this monitor, but keep in mind that it might be short to maintain signal integrity.

Lastly, for ergonomics, you will have between -5° and +15° tilt, -30° to +30° swivel, and 110mm height adjustment, in addition to a 100x100mm VESA mount.

While MPG 322URX has yet to get official pricing, French retailer PC21 already lists it for €1,485.10 (including taxes). A hefty cost, assuming it’s not a placeholder. That said, if you want an uncompromised experience, at least you have a choice. In any case, 322URX is expected to launch sometime after CES 2025, backed by a three-year warranty.
