Nvidia ensures that GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop GPUs are fine

Good news, since no one prefers sending back their newly acquired laptop for RMA after putting all their personal data on it.

Nvidia has quashed reports claiming that its upcoming RTX 50 Series mobile GPUs also suffer from missing ROPs like their desktop counterparts. Talking to The Verge, the brand’s representative ensured that “no further issues” had been discovered on these chips, so users can purchase gaming notebooks with peace of mind.

“All partners continue to run checks as part of our standard testing procedure,” Nvidia GeForce Global PR Director Ben Berraondo told The Verge.

This response comes following reports of a delayed launch of some laptop models as manufacturers were allegedly instructed by Nvidia to open ready-to-ship pallets of laptops to check for GPUs with missing ROPs. A plausible scenario seeing how desktop RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti all suffered from this issue, albeit to a small extent according to Nvidia. Verifying the mobile chips seems logical to avoid another debacle, which Team Green doesn’t need with what it already has on its plate.

While we don’t know the exact reason for this procedure, it could be due to some sort of last-minute software or firmware update meant to improve the owners’ first experience. But again, Nvidia could be downplaying the situation. After all, “no further issues” doesn’t exclude that some problems were present previously, and running checks is a step that should be taken before putting laptops in their boxes. I guess the number of recent issues facing PC hardware in general – not only Nvidia – makes me sceptical.

Since both mobile and desktop RTX 50 Series GPUs are based on the same Blackwell architecture, it becomes hard to believe that the former is immune. Most likely Nvidia had discovered the problem early enough and fixed it before these devices launch. What is sure is that from now on, many users will verify their hardware specs, be it from Nvidia, AMD, or Intel.

In any case, laptops powered by Nvidia’s RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 mobile GPUs are expected to hit shelves sometime this month, following RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070-powered models in April. Pricing is expected to start from $1,299 for RTX 5070 models, going up to $2,899 for RTX 5090 machines.
