Philips continues its budget streak with another 280Hz monitor

A swift budget esports monitor.

Philips has launched an affordable 280Hz gaming monitor featuring the Evnia series’ signature look. Sitting among the cheapest displays on the market, this model is bound to attract many competitive players.

Evnia 27M2C5200W is a FHD (1920 x 1080) gaming monitor boasting 280Hz refresh rate and 1ms GtG response time. It uses a curved 27in VA panel with a 4000:1 contrast, making competent in both fast-paced esports and story-driven titles. Philips indicates support for HDR 10, though I’m not sure how since 27M2C5200W lacks dimming zones while maxing out at 300nits of brightness.

That said, the display should serve you well in its core market, giving you an advantage in faster-paced games. It has a clean design that can fit seamlessly in all environments. Just make note of its 1500R curvature, which isn’t quite wrap-around, but it is a touch steeper than your usual. Unfortunately, due to its budget positioning, this model doesn’t carry the brand’s famous Ambiglow RGB lighting.

Like all the best gaming monitors, the 27M2C5200W includes a bunch of gaming features. The most notable is an FPS mode that brightens dark scenes to improve visibility, quickly accessible through the on-screen display (OSD).

On the connectivity side, there are two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and an audio jack. Note that Philips integrates the PSU into the chassis, which reduces the cable mess. That said, I prefer external power bricks as they are easily replaceable if needed. Lastly, for ergonomics, you get -5° to +20° tilt, 30° swivel, and 130mm height adjustment, in addition to a 100mm VESA mount.

Philips 27M2C5200W IO.

Evnia 27M2C5200W gaming monitor will be available starting in July at €229 MSRP. This puts it among the cheapest 280Hz FHD monitors on the market, going head-to-head with Asus’s TUF Gaming lineup. AOC, which falls under the same umbrella, also offers an equivalent product if you prefer a more gamer look.
