According to analysts at TrendForce, storage drives already cost up to 80% more now than they did at the end of 2023. It’s no surprise that this spike will not slow down any time soon as generative models become more commonplace. With that in mind, it seems now is perhaps your last chance to grab Samsung’s NVMe cheaper than it’s ever been.
Samsung has always been a bit of an anomaly in the storage space, bucking the trend of rising prices. It’s not impervious to inflation and will undoubtedly bloat as internal components required to build them become scarce, but drives like Samsung 990 Pro stay as low as possible for as long as they can. That’s why it’s one of the best SSDs.
Samsung 990 Evo follows in the same footsteps, with discounts all across the globe. Amazon US leads the charge with 55% off, bringing the price down to $69.99. UK shoppers also have the luxury of 18% off at £82.67. These are the lowest prices we’ve seen in both regions. 990 Evo doesn’t saturate its Gen 4 bandwidth but 5,000MB/s sequential read and 4,200MB/s sequential write speeds are plenty for just about any task you have in mind. IOPS also sit at around 680K read and 800K write, placing it in the middle of the pack.
Strangely, it’s a hybrid device with a Gen 5 interface, but this caps out at two lanes rather than four, rendering the speeds the same as a four-lane PCIe 4. A little pointless, perhaps, but it doesn’t diminish the fact this is a solid drive for a staggeringly low price right now.
