If you’ve read our best gaming monitor guide, you’ll know I’m gaga for a good OLED screen. I’m not blind to the price, though, as they often sport a hefty MSRP. That’s why we’re always on the lookout for a deserving discount, and the deals fairy has finally waved her wand on Samsung Odyssey G8.

Samsung’s 34in ultrawide has come a long way since it debuted for a lofty $1,499.99 at the back end of 2022. While it often comes down in price, I rarely see it dip below quadruple figures.

In the good old US of A, a 33% discount puts the display at $799.99. This is the cheapest it’s ever been. Amazon doesn’t say how many have already flown off the digital shelves, but I wouldn’t wait around to find out.

As an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel, it already has the advantage of true blacks, a perfect contrast ratio, and an ultra-fast 0.03ms response time. That’s par for the course, though. The 175Hz refresh rate across a WQHD 3440×1440 resolution is what makes Odyssey G8 shine. Paired with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to stop screen tearing and DisplayHDR True Black 400, Samsung’s designed for immersion.

One of the more unique aspects of this display is that it’s not just a gaming monitor. Sure, the game bar settings are there for quick access to HDR and your frame rate, but it’s also a smart TV. Leveraging the built-in Neo Quantum processor, Samsung pops in a streaming hub that grants you access to your favourite services. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus come as standard. With a remote in hand and voice control options, you won’t even suffer any finicky on-screen displays (OSDs) to navigate it.

Although I’ll always recommend a dedicated audio solution, the built-in 10W speakers do the trick nicely. Samsung uses Active Voice Amplifier Pro AI to elevate your sound by analysing your surroundings and enhancing dialogue. Not bad, considering poor levels are a pet peeve of mine.

Now that I have an OLED, I wouldn’t turn back. Sure, it comes with the risk of burn-in, but no panel is immune to wear and tear. Since the deal is on Amazon, you can use the retailer’s 30-day money-back guarantee to try it for yourself. All you need to do is return the monitor within the month if you’re not happy.
