In my years of building a smart home, no addition has proven more useful than a video doorbell. This unassuming camera by my front door has saved me from encounters with salesman, missing packages, and more in the time I put it there. I’m of the opinion everyone should have one, and Amazon’s Blink Video Doorbell is a great way to grab one without breaking the bank.

Blink Video Doorbell

“The entrance to your home means everything. Welcome visitors and protect what matters most with Blink Video Doorbell.” – Amazon

Over on Amazon US, you’ll find Blink Video Doorbell on its lonesome for a cool $29.99. However, for an additional $5, you can grab it as part of a bundle with Sync Module 2. I’ll get into why I recommend taking the latter route shortly, but whichever path you take you’ll enjoy a half-price discount.

Sporting a FHD (1080p) camera, Blink Video Doorbell captures footage from your doorstep with plenty of clarity. You can expect reliable round-the-clock coverage from it too, thanks to its infrared sensor taking watch come nightfall. Regardless of when you’re peeking through the viewfinder, though, you can communicate with the postie and whoever else comes to your door through your smartphone via its built-in microphone and speaker.

Amazon does offer a cloud subscription service for Blink Video Doorbell to save clips but there is another option. Enter Sync Module 2, which can store events locally for free after you attach some USB storage to it. With this in mind, I strongly encourage going for the bundle given it doesn’t cost much more out of the gate and provides longstanding value.

Aside from its price, part of what makes Blink Video Doorbell so attractive is the ease of its installation. While you can pair it with mains power and your existing chime (US only), it’ll also run for ages on AA batteries alone and can use your Echo devices as a stand-in chime. Not only does this save you from fiddling with wiring it also reduces the number of holes you’ll need to drill into your house for its final mount.
