We should’ve known it was too good to be true that SSD prices are at an all-time low. Sadly, storage costs are on the rise once again, with industry insiders predicting a sharp 55% inflation. Fortunately, that’s the same figure Crucial has chopped off its 2TB MX500 SSD, which is under half price once again.
It’s not quite the cheapest we’ve ever seen the device. For a very brief window earlier this year, it was available for £82.50. Still, this might be your last chance to grab the 2TB Crucial MX500 for under £100. There’s no discount across the pond, but it’s still one of the most affordable SSDs on Amazon US.
You’re right in thinking that 2.5in SSDs aren’t nearly as quick as NVMe solutions. Crucial rates its 2TB MX500 at a 560MBps sequential read speed and 510MBps sequential write. This is 92% slower than the best SSD out there, at least on paper.
It’s not all about speed, though. Unlike the initial jump from hard drives to SSDs, there are mere seconds between the loading times of a 2.5in versus NVMe. On top of that, its SATA connection isn’t as bandwidth hungry, meaning you can fit more to your motherboard. They’re ideal if you’ve already maxed out the few M.2 slots you have.
Just think of all the things you can do with 2TB. You can very nearly download all The Game Awards nominees available for Windows. Seriously, we’ve done the maths, and collectively that’d take around 2,362GB. It’s not a bad ask for superb titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, and Cyberpunk 2077 with its Phantom Liberty expansion.
