Western Digital stuffs 8TB of capacity inside its WD_Black SSD

We need more 8TB drives.

Western Digital has announced an 8TB WD_BLACK SN850X M.2 SSD offering Gen 4 speeds and a long warranty. Targeting users needing high-density storage, this compact drive is perfect for laptops and gaming consoles.

Western Digital (WD) has released a higher-capacity version of its WD_BLACK SN850X offering a larger 8TB capacity in M.2 format, with or without a heatsink. The drive keeps the same 80mm (L) x 22mm (W) x 3.88mm (H) dimensions, as well as 10.31mm thick with the heatsink, while doubling the storage capacity.

Like its lower-capacity siblings, this 8TB version uses the in-house 3D TLC NAND – probably made by SanDisk – coupled to LPDDR4 RAM for caching. The brand will also likely use the same WD Black G2 controller for this model, linking to the host machine via a PCIe Gen 4 x4 interface.

Regarding performance, WD claims up to 7,200MB/s sequential read and 6,600MB/s sequential write, alongside 1,200K IOPS in both random read and write. These specs are nearly identical to the 4TB variant, partially limited by the available PCIe bandwidth. A perfect solution for your PlayStation 5 console.

When it comes to durability, as expected, doubling the capacity doubles the endurance, now reaching 4,800TBW (Terabytes Written). This means you can fill 2.63TB per day for five years to reach this limit. In other words, don’t think about it; just use it.

The 8TB WD_BLACK SN850X is available for £832.99 / $849.99 / €967.99, backed by a five-year warranty. If this model is outside of your budget or you don’t need this much storage, note that the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities are all currently on sale during Prime Day. To be more specific, the 1TB model can be had for £68.39 (-57%), with the 2TB at £118.73 (-67%) and 4TB at £227.99 (-22%).
